What is voms project?

VOMS (Virtual Organization Membership Service) is a middleware project that enables administrative management of user authorization and authentication for virtual organizations. Virtual organizations consist of a community of individuals or institutions collaborating and sharing resources in a distributed environment. VOMS was initially developed for the purpose of the European Data Grid project, but it has since been adopted by other grid computing projects.

VOMS enables the management of various virtual organization membership roles, such as administrators or members, and defining the permissions and access control policies for each role. VOMS allows administrators to create, manage, and delete users and groups within the virtual organization while ensuring security and privacy of the members' data. VOMS also provides a secure framework for user authentication and authorization, which is necessary for accessing the shared resources in a virtual organization.

VOMS has been widely used in various grid computing projects, such as the Worldwide LHC Computing Grid and the EUDAT Collaborative Data Infrastructure. VOMS is an open-source project and is supported by a community of developers and users. The development is led by the European Grid Infrastructure (EGI), and the latest version of VOMS is available on GitHub.
